Many people are under the belief that if you are under the age of 25
than you can't rent
a car but that is not always true. Policies vary from
state-to-state, as some states don't allow you to rent cars at all
while other invoke additional fees or limitations. It is suggested that
you read every state owned policy to make sure it is fully understood
what fees and liabilities will be applied.
As an example to see what type of fees and restrictions will need to be
met, check out what our Phoenix, AZ policy statement
indicates:
Minimum age for renting a vehicle is 18.
The fees for underage renters are as follows:
$15.00/day: 21 - 24 years old renting non-specialty
vehicles (see FAQs)
$25.00/day: 18 - 20 years old renting non-specialty
vehicles (see FAQs)
$30.00/day: 18 - 24 years old renting specialty
vehicles (see FAQs)
$10.00/day: 18 - 24 years old renting with Corporate
accounts for any car class.
Underage Drivers are not permitted to rent Luxury Vehicles.
A quick synopsis shows that those who are under 21 will pay the most
money and may have restrictions on luxury cars. It is no surprise given
the fact that accident rates rise the younger a person is.
The bottom line is that if you are under 25 you will pay higher rates
but that does not mean deals don't exist. Do your research!
Work your memberships standing. Discount codes are offered to valued
members of a car rental company so if you've rented before, make sure
you pay less the next time. These opportunities are floating around
everywhere and you will only need to browse a site briefly to likely
find one. Check your member benefits, and see if something works. You
may need to show a member card when you show up at the rental counter.
The bottom line is, if you are a valued customer than that value should
be factored in to result in real savings. If you are with a company
that does not meet these guidelines than find another rental company.
Read the fine print. On the surface it may seem as if there will not be
additional charges but when the bill comes, you'll discover that there
were "hidden" fees.
Also, print a copy of your personal auto insurance policy and take it
with you when you travel. Having proof of insurance could calm a
nervous rental agent.
When it comes to car rentals, being under 25 is rough. You’ll need to
work harder to get a deal, if you get one at all. But the good thing
is, you'll have the rest of your life to rent a car.
