Some destinations in the Dominican Republic have become home to resorts and amenities that don’t reflect the area’s uniquely Dominican character. To get that authentic cultural experience, you can set your sights on Santiago de los Caballeros, a bustling and sprawling city. This urban area is the second largest in the Dominican Republic, trailing only Santo Domingo. Due to its long history, Santiago combines traces of the past with a fast-paced nightlife and thriving industrial production.
See the City
The historic heart of Santiago is the unmissable Monumento a Los Héroes de la Restauración, known locally as simply El Monumento. The statue-topped pillar stands in remembrance of the Dominican Republic’s 19th-century struggle to gain freedom from Spanish colonial rule. Today, the monument serves as a convenient meeting place for locals and visitors. Within the 220-foot structure is a five-story museum, containing historical artifacts and art, such as the paintings of exiled Spanish artist José Vela Zanetti.
Though Santiago can trace its existence back to 1495, when it was founded by aristocrats who sailed from Spain, there is a youthful vitality to the city. The presence of universities has helped Santiago keep a young and enthusiastic population, and it supports numerous restaurants, bars and clubs. You can gain a rich view of the city by spending a day exploring historic and artistic sites, and then going dancing once the sun goes down.
In addition to history, education, nightlife and industry, Santiago is a city with strong sports roots. During the October-to-January season, the lauded Águilas Cibaeñas baseball team calls the city’s Estadio Cibao home. The Águilas have delivered thrills to their fans since 1952, winning the national title 22 times. Baseball isn’t the only sport with a foothold in Santiago, as the city also holds the cutting-edge basketball stadium Arena Del Cibao.
Enjoy the Region
Just outside of Santiago, you can find mountains and valleys. The contrast between city and countryside demonstrates many sides to the Dominican Republic in a relatively small space. Taking a hike into the Cordillera Central mountains is a refreshing way to spend your day and requires only a short trip from Santiago.
If golf is your game, you can head to Las Aromas Golf Club. From the course, designed by Pete Dye, you can take in the incredible sites of the Cibao Valley and Santiago. Las Aromas is considered a worthy challenge for serious players.
For an exciting view of life in the Dominican Republic, you can always count on Santiago.
